Hybrid Vegetables

EGGPLANT (Solanum melongena esculentum)

DAYS TO MATURITY:  53-125.

PLANTING TIME:  Eggplant likes night temperatures to remain above 55 degrees F.  Sow seeds or seedlings in the spring.

SOIL:  Fertile and well-drained, with decomposed manure added; pH 5.5-6.5.

NUTRIENTS:  Feed every three to four weeks with fish emuslsion or other organic fertilizer.  Excess nitrogen results in all foliage and little fruit.

WATER:  Soak the soil deeply, but never keep it saturated.  Water in basins around the individual plants.

LIGHT:  Full sun.

SPACING:  Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep; space seedlings 2 1/2 feet apart. 

HARVEST:  Eggplant is ready when it is shiny purple.  If the color is dull, it is overripe. 

STORAGE:  Use this vegetable fresh.

Bambino:  52 days.  12" plants.  1 1/2" diameter round fruit.  NIC

Black Bell: 
68 days.  Classic Italian eggplant.  Medium-large, glossy, deep purple-black fruits.  Very adaptable to most soils.  VER

Black King: 
75 days.  Uniform, large, oval-shaped fruit with vivid dark skin and superior texture.  Fruit over 1 pound.  TER 

Burpee Hybrid:  70 days.  8 x 5" dark medium-size fruit.  Drought tolerant plants.  BURP

Classic: 
76 days.  Teardrop-shaped.  Deep purple-black.  Vigorous plants.  HAR

Crescent Moon Hybrid:  62 days.  36" plants.  Pure white, mild skin.  Slender fruit needs to be picked at 6-7" long.  BURP

Dusky: 
65-70 days.  Compact plants produce 8" eggplant, but can be picked at 3-5" in length.  Glossy black.  NIC TER

Fairy Tale:  50 days.  AAS winner.  Marbled purple and white tones grow in clusters of 6 fruits.  3/4-1" mini eggplants.  Compact plants.  BURP GUR NIC PAR TER VER

Green Goddess: 
63 days.  Light green skinned eggplant.  Mild and sweet.  50 fruit per plant.  8" long and less than 2" in diameter.  NIC

Gretel: 
55 days.  AAS Winner 2009.  Glossy, pure white fruit borne in clusters.  Slender, 3-4" long.  Have green calyx and produced on 3' plants.  HAR

Hansel:  70 days.  AAS winner. Finger-shaped fruit is 2-3" at baby size or wait until they grow to 9-10" for full-grown fruit.  Dark purple. 18" plants.  HAR TER

Ichiban:  58 days.  Extra-early Oriental-type.  Glossy, slender, cylindrical 10" long fruit.  Only 2-3" diameter.  36-40" plant.  VER

Lavender Touch: 
63 days.  Mild, no bitterness.  8" long x 3" wide.  White with lavender blush.  HAR

Little Fingers:  65 days.  Oriental-type grows 5-8" long.  slender, ebony-purple fruit.  Spineless, robust plants.  ABU

Little Purple Tiger:  60-65 days.  3" long fruits, have bitter-free white flesh.  Perfect size for single servings.  40-45" plants. 

Millonaire Hybrid:  55 days.  Japanese type, long and slender, 10-12 x 1/2".  Purple-black fruit.  BURP TER

Nubia: 
70 days.  4-8" long, oval to round fruit with creamy white skin that's streaked and specked with rich purple.  36-48" tall plants.  HEN

Ophelia:  55 days.  Mini eggplant.  2 ozs., borne in clusters and have a deep purple color.  Good for stuffing or frying. HAR

Park's Whopper Hybrid:  62 days.  Harvest when shiny purple and teardrop-shaped at 6-8" for best flavor.  PAR

Prosperosa:  65 days.  Grown in Tuscany for generations.  Round glossy midnight-violet to rich grape-purple fruit.  White flesh keeps its color well after cutting.  Heavy yields.  PAR

Purple Rain Hybrid:  66 days.  wine-purple, streaked creamy-white oval and nearly seedless.  6 x4 1/2" fruits.  BURP

Twilight: 
62 days.  Strong, compact plants bear 4-8" ebony-colored eggplants.  Heat and drought tolerant.  GUR

Twinkle:  50-55 days.  24" plant is compact enough for container growing.   Harvest  eggplant when 2-2 1/2".  Speckled fruit. HAR HEN PAR TER

White Star: 
75 days.  White fruit are tapered, teardrop-shaped, and measure 5-7" long x 3 1/2-4" at the bottom.  tall, vigorous plants.  Pick fruits early and often  to keep them from turning yellow.  HAR
