Peas are a vine producing plant that needs to be grown on a trellis or fence.  Shelling peas are used for canning.  Snap peas are eaten like a snap bean.

Melrose:  Heirloom OP.  Italian heirloom.  Frying pepper.  4" x 2" turn brilliant red early.  Very sweet and full-bodied.  SOU

Miniature Bell Peppers (Baby Belle):  OP 55-75 days.  Karen loves these little guys.  Miniature bells are 3 lobed, 2 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" long. Very sweet.  ABU NIC TER

Napolean Sweet: 
Heirloom 79-90 days.  24" tall plants.  8" long, thick fleshed fruits.  Mild and sweet.  Matures from green to red.  Use fresh, for frying or drying.  TOT

Orange Bell:  OP 100 days.  thick walls, 3 1/2" x 4".  Later maturing and outstanding flavor.  SOU

Sweet Chocolate (Choco):  OP 86 days.  2 1/2" x 4 1/2", 3 or 4 lobed, shiny, chocolate-cherry-colored bells when ripe.  Unusual dark maroon interior.  Stake plants for best production. ABU BOU SOU

Tennessee Cheese:  Heirloom 82 days.  Originally from Spain, where it is still used as a staple in many dishes.  Round, apple or tomato-shaped, with a flattened base and thick, delicious skin.  Use it fresh, pickled, canned, or dried for paprika.  TOT

World Beater (Ruby Giant):  Heirloom OP 72 days.  Tall plants produce huge fruits, 3 1/2" x 5".  Thick flesh.  Green to red.  Very sweet when red.  SOU

Yellow Belle:  OP 65 days.  California Wonder type.  2 1/2 x 4", 4 lobed, thick flesh, yellow to yellow-orange to crimson red when fully ripe.  SOU

Yolo Wonder:  OP 70-80 days.  Large, thick-walled fruits are mild, green ripening to red.  Thick foliage protects from sunscald.  BOU

PEPPERS ( Sweet, specialty)

Alma Paprika:  OP 85 days.  Grow your own paprika.  Plants are loaded with round, thick-walled 1-2" frut.  Fruit starts out creamy white , then orange, before turning shiny red.  Harvest when red for drying purposes. HEN TER TOT

Ashe County Pimento: 
OP 70 days.  Sweet, bright red, thick-fleshed pimento pepper, 4" x 11/2".  SOU

Corno di Toro Red:  Heirloom 75-90 days.  Huge Italian sweet pepper with long, curved fruits that look like a bull's horn.  6-8" long and 2" diameter.  Red when ripe.  BOU SHU SOU TOT

Hungarian Paprika:  OP 70 days.  18" tall plants.  1" x 4" peppers turn from green to red.  Very dry flesh ideal for drying.  SOU

Heirloom 70-90 days.  Elongated bells begin green and mature to red.  8" long.  ABU

Perfection (True Heart): 
OP 80 days.  30" tall plants.  Heart-shaped, 3" x 2 1/2", thick-walls.  Use fresh, roasted, peeled or canned.  SOU

Red Cherry (Cherry Sweet):  Heirloom OP 70 days.  Shaped like bonbons, dark crimson-red 1-1/2" x 1".   Bushy 20" plants.  Great for pickling, canning, and stuffing.  NIC SOU

Sheepnose Pimento: 
Heirloom 80 days.  Pimento-shaped, 3" x 4" fruits.  Ideal for canning, freezing or eating fresh.  Fruits keep for weeks in the refrigerator.  TOT

Super Shepherd:  OP 66 days.  Italian sweet pepper, 3" x 5-7", 3-4 lobed.  Use fresh, fried or pickled.  SOU

Sweet Banana (Long Sweet Hungarian):  OP Heirloom 72 days.  Tapered 6" long fruit go from light green to orange to red.  BURP NIC SOU TOT

Sweet Bullnose: 
Heirloom 85 days.  Stocky bell pepper.  3 1/2-4" long, by 3" at shoulder, thick rind and sweet flavor.  Chiefs believe it's the best for pepper sauce, and pickling.  ABU

Tennessee Cheese:  Heirloom 70 days.  Spanish heirloom that thrives in short season gardens.  4" fruit have thick walls, squat, ruffled shape that's ideal for stuffing.  Shrug off cold weather and mature from yellow-green to deep red.  ABU

Tequila Sunrise:  OP 77 days.  1" x 5", thick-fleshed peppers grow upright on plant.  Use fresh or cooked.  Turns from green to orange.  ABU SOU TOT

Tolli's Sweet: 
Heirloom 75-85 days.  Italian variety.  Sweet, red fruits, used for eating, canning and making sauces.  5" tapered fruits start out green and ripen to deep red.  TOT

PEPPERS (Hot)

Ajidulce:  OP Heirloom 11 days.  Venezuelan heirloom.  Has same shape, size, color and aroma as Habanero, but is sweet spicy with only a trace of heat.  1" x 2", tapering at the stem end.  Goes from green to orange-red to red when fully ripe.  SOU

Ancho Poblano:  OP 90 days.  Basis for many Mexican dishes.  Fry when green or use in enchilada sauce or mole when ripened to a deep brick-red. ABU BOU BURP


Aci Sivri:  OP Heirloom 75 days.  An old Turkish heirloom.  36-48" plants produces dozens of slender, curved, spicy peppers averaging 7" long.  Ripens to shiny crimson.   Moderately hot pepper.  NIC

Aji Amarillo(Aji Orange, Aji Yellow): OP 80-90 days.  From Peru.  3' plant produce 50-100 3" fruits. turns from mildly hot green to yellow, and to a hot 1000-scoville, ivory/yellow.  NIC

Ammazzo (Joe's Round): 
OP 65 days.  Italian variety.  Unusual, tall, ornamental hot pepper that goes from green to red.  1/2" high x 3/4" wide fruits are borne in clusters of 8-15.  Ripe clusters resemble red marbles in a green bowl.  SOU


Anaheim Chile:  OP 77 days.  Mild pendant-shaped pepper that turns from green to dark red.  Use fresh, canned, fried, or dried. Karen likes this variety in her salsas.  HEN SOU TOT

Anaheim College 64:  OP 74 days.  Medium hot 6-8" long fruit.  6-8 fruit per plant.  Thick-walled conical fruit turn from green to red.

Anaheim, T.M.R. 23: 
OP Heirloom 76 days.  Mildly pungent.  Tall plant produces brilliant green, 7-8" fruits which ripen to red.  NIC

Bulgarian Carrot:  OP 70-80 days.  18" tall plant produce clusters of peppers 3 1/2" long.  Ripens from green to fluorescent orange.  Intense flavor that finishes hot.

OP Heirloom 110 days.  Very hot!  Comes from Yucatan region and famous in hot and spicy salsas.  30" plant with 1- 1/12" peppers.  BURP HEN

Cayenne, Long Red:  OP Heirloom 90 days.  Fiery, red-hot seasoning pepper.  Use fresh or dried, especially in salsa or chili.  3/4" x 3-4" peppers turn green to red. ABU SHU

Chili Lombak: 
OP Heirloom 90 days.  From Lombak, Indonesia.  Fruits are 1" at the shoulder and taper to 5-6" long.  Green to orange to red.  Excellent hot drying pepper.  The lower third of the fruit has no heat.

Chinese Five Color:  OP 70-90 days.  Ornamental hot pepper, 5/8-3/4" wide by 1 1/2" long, with a palette of bright fruits in purple, creamy yellow, yellow, orange and red, all at the same time.  30" plants.  Fiery hot!

Czechoslovakian Black:  Heirloom OP 58 days.  Czech heirloom.  Highly ornament and culinary hot pepper.  Pendant-shaped ruits, 1" x 2 1/2", bluntly conical and medium-hot.  3' plants.  Red fruit at the base, purple black fruit at the top contrasts with purple green leaves and white-streaked lavender flowers.  SOU

Early Jalapeno:  OP 66 days.  2' tall plants bear heavy loads of 2-3" fruit.  Milder hot pepper.  Turns from green to red at the hottest stage.  Karen uses this variety in her salsas.  ABU BOU NIC

Golden Pepperoncini: 
OP Heirloom 60 days.  Famous Greece pickling pepper.  Yellow-green are slightly pungent and 2 1/2" long.  Medium size plant produces a heavy crop.  NIC

Fish Pepper:  Heirloom OP 55 days.  African American heirloom from Maryland.  2" long fruits have variegated colors.  Very hot, used traditionally in shellfish and fish cookery.  Also good for drying. ABU SOU TOT

Habanero:  OP Heirloom 90-100 days.  One of the hottest peppers of all.  12" plants yield 2|"x1" thin walled peppers that start out dark-green and ripen to a pink-orange. ABU BOU BURP NIC SOU

Italian Pepperoncini:  OP Heirloom 75 days.  A Tuscan hottie.  Trim, upright 30" bushes produce a load of slender, slightly wrinkled green to red peppers.  Pick at 2-6" long.

Jalapeno: 
OP 72 days.  Karen likes this in her salsas.  Hot, 1" x 2" thick-walled peppers turn green to red, but are usually picked at the green stage.  HEN SHU SOU

Lemon Drop:  Heirloom 100 days.  Citrus-flavored from Peru.  Bright yellow, crinkled, cone-shaped 2 12" long by 1/2" wide fruits.  Average of less than 15 seeds per pepper.  2' high, dense plants.  Excellent choice for container gardening.  TOT

Long Thin Cayenne:  OP 90 days.  Bushy 26" plants produce slim, green, 5-6" long fruit that turn red when ripe.  Very hot.  BOU

Peter, Red: 
Heirloom 90 days.  4-6" pods with blunt ends.  Fruits change from green to a deep red when fully mature.  Excellent for chili powder.  20-30" plant. TOT VER

Pimiento De Padron:  OP Heirloom 50 days.  Used in Spanish Tapa bars.  About 1 in 20 of these peppers will take the top of your head off.  Havest green when the size of an olive for mildest flavor.

OP 88 days.  Bullet-shaped, 1/2" x 1 1/4" are borne upright on 3' plants.  Turn purple to red with purple-black stripes.

Bintje:   Heirloom variety from the Netherlands.  Smooth, rounded, medium-sized potatoes with yellow skin and flesh.  Good baker, boiled, roasted or fried.  HEN

Caribe:  OP.  Deep purple skin with snow white flesh.  Can be quite large with good yields.  SOU

Carola: 
OP. Mid-season. Yellow-fleshed potato.  Heavy yields of medium-size with a light beige skin.   For baking or frying.  SOU

Cranberry Red: 
OP.  Red-skinned, red-fleshed.  Low starch content, smooth texture.  High yields. ABU SOU

Fingerling Salad: 
Late season.  Medium-sized, long, 2-4" finger-like tubers.  Smooth, buff-yellow skin and light-yellow interior.  Waxy texture.  Stores well. SHU VER

German Butterball:  105-135 days.  Late-season.  Superior flavor, storage and versatility.  Russet-type with rich, golden, slightly flaky flesh.  Tubers set on a sprawling root system.  Excellent, long-term storability.  ABU

Red Dale:  OP.  Large bright red tubers with pure white flesh.  Good choice for fall planting in most southern areas.  SOU

Rose Finn Apple Fingerling: 
OP.  Rose colored skin with moderately dry yellow flesh.  BURP HEN SOU

Rose Gold:

Russian Banana Fingerling:

Porto Rico:

Pumpkins are not suitable for small space gardens, so give them a space of their own to grow freely.  You can, of course, always let them climb a trellis and hold the pumpkins in place with netting.

Spinach grows well in cooler times of the year and when the weather heats up spinach substitues fill in.  Some varieties are not suitable for small space gardens, but do well near a fence, on a trellis or in a flower bed.

Lakota: 
100 days.  Developed from old Lakota Sioux heirloom.  Leave on the vine to mature, and cut so the stems stays attached to the fruit.  BURP

Marina Di Chioggia:  OP Heirloom 105 days.  Dusty-green, bumpy, turban-shaped squash average 10 pounds.  Deep yellow-orange flesh.  In Italy it is prized for gnocchi and for roasting.   NIC TER
