Planting starts in July and August

Depending on the area of the country you live in, July and August is the perfect time for planting root vegetables, lettuce, onions and cabbages.

Here in the Sacramento Valley tomatoes are still ripening on the vine, corn is in season and the zuchinni has run amuck.  As much as I love sitting back and watching the garden grow, I know there is still work to be done if I want the oriental garden varieties.

Late summer is the prefect time to sow easy-to-grow root vegetables for a fall and winter harvest.  Carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips and rutabagas are good choices.

I love the mini winter babies that are fast growing simply because they are babies.  Here are a few varieties you might want to try.

.Adelaide Carrot, a true mini-carrot with a crisp texture.
.Soloist Chinese Cabbage, just right for an asian dishes.
.Ching-Chiang Pac Choi, productive dwarf variety that only grows to 14 inches tall.
.Violetta Pac Choi, rich violet color, similar to Ching-Chang.
.Dazzle Lettuce, palm size mini romaine.
.Regal Spinach, semi-savoyed, dense growing.  Harvest young and small.
.Purplette Onion,  the purple color will add color to any dish.

This is the time to plant cool weather vegetables and here are a few:

Arugula (Italian)  gives peppery taste to salads.
     Lettuce of all types
     Kale
     Mustard greens
     Swiss Chard
     Romanesco broccoli (Karen's personal favorite)
     Broccoli Raab
     Cauliflower
     Green onion
     Cabbages
     Most Oriental vegetables
     Carrots
